Sony is set to release the smaller and lighter PS5 Slim, offering extra internal storage, a detachable disc drive, and a compact design. The new model will replace the original PS5 and maintain its aesthetic, with customizable options for cover panels. In addition, Sony will be launching a cloud-gaming streaming service and the PlayStation Portal. Gamers can also look forward to incredible deals on Amazon Prime Day.
Sony is gearing up to thrill the gaming fraternity with the introduction of the smaller, lighter successor to PlayStation 5 (PS5) – the PS5 Slim. Expected to hit the stores globally in the coming months, the compact model would weigh 24% less than the original PS5, stand 30% smaller and even offer extra internal storage.
The PS5 Slim, set to replace the original model in due course, will offer 1TB of storage as opposed to the current 825GB, and rejigs its USB port configuration too. Furthermore, it will sport a detachable protruding disc drive. Those preferring digital downloads, however, can opt for the disc-less edition.
Sony disclosed that the PS5 Slim carries the same price tag as the original PS5, with the disc version to cost £479.99 and the digital variant to be available for £389.99. Even though the slim avatar won’t match the current faceplates, fresh ones will be accessible by next year.
Amazon Prime Day 2023, too, is sure to catch gamers’ attention with its incredible deals. With last year exhibiting significant markdowns on Xbox Series S and Nintendo Switch, the two-day gala potentially hails as the opportune moment to invest in leading-edge consoles. Currently, attractive discounts are on offer, including PlayStation consoles, Oculus VR headsets, Nintendo Switch consoles, and games.
The Sony PS5 Slim maintains the original’s minimal white slab aesthetic, with customizable options thanks to easily removable cover panels. Sony unveiled its plan to discontinue the original PS5, substituting it with the new model after the stock runs out. Moreover, a separate £100 disc drive will be available for digital edition adapters who fancy playing physical games.
While cloud gaming has been generating a buzz, Sony has embraced the trend with the PS5 set to offer cloud-game streaming across the UK from 23 October. PlayStation Plus Premium members could dive into hundreds of games without the necessity of installing them. Top games lining up include Fall Guys, Fortnite, Dead Island 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Nideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of Platform Experience at Sony Interactive Entertainment, shared that the new cloud-gaming service can broadcast games in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, alongside HDR and surround sound capabilities. A minimum 38 Mbps internet connection, however, is necessary for 4K streaming. Sony’s latest streaming handheld, the PlayStation Portal, is due to be unveiled on 15 November.
With this combination of launches – the slim version of PS5, the cloud-gaming streaming offer, and PlayStation Portal – Sony stays at the forefront in the gaming scene, spicing things up for gamers. Meanwhile, gamers are bound to cheer the tantalising gaming deals by Amazon on the anvil. Stay tuned for more updates and keep the gaming spirit alive!
