In a disturbing turn of events in Idaho, two elderly men, James L. Mauney, 83, and Gerald “Don” Henderson, 72, were tragically killed in incidents linked to a white supremacist prison break. James L. Mauney was discovered dead in Leland, Idaho, after an encounter with fugitives Skylar Meade, 31, and Nicholas Umphenour. The suspects, after meeting Mauney, left his body near an abandoned vehicle along with his dogs, who Mauney was reportedly walking at the time of the incident. Gerald “Don” Henderson was found dead at his residence outside Orofino, suffering from a gunshot wound. It is understood that Mauney had no prior knowledge of the suspects, but Henderson was known to have associated with Umphenour.
The backdrop to these heinous acts involves the two suspects, Meade and Umphenour, both affiliated with the white supremacist Aryan Knights gang. Their escape from custody occurred when Meade, who was out on a medical visit, managed to flee, while Umphenour facilitated the escape by attacking and shooting two correctional officers. Meade, with a history of violent offenses, had been serving a sentence since 2016, with an expected release in 2036.
The duo was eventually apprehended by the Boise, Idaho Police Department. Despite their capture, the incidents have prompted a review of security policies by the Idaho Department of Correction, as the community seeks to understand the circumstances leading to these tragic events and cope with the senseless loss of two lives. The ongoing investigation aims to provide answers and justice for the victims and their families.
