Marcin Jablonski, a 44-year-old from Carlton Colville near Lowestoft, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after a police chase ended in a fatal car crash. The incident occurred on August 13th last year in Norfolk. Jablonski, who was found to be at least twice over the legal drink-driving limit, was driving a stolen Land Rover Defender when he collided head-on with a Nissan Juke, resulting in the death of 28-year-old Aisatou Mballow-Baldeh.
The chase, which included police vehicles and a helicopter, began when Jablonski refused to stop for officers. It escalated as he drove the stolen vehicle through a maize field before rejoining the road and causing the fatal crash. A video captured by the police helicopter showed the moments leading up to the collision.
Jablonski pleaded guilty to a series of charges, including causing death by dangerous driving, driving without insurance, aggravated vehicle-taking, and criminal damage. He was also banned from driving for 13 years. His son, Thomaz Urbaniak, 26, from Newmarket, Suffolk, who was a passenger in the car, received a two-year jail sentence for aggravated vehicle taking and burglary of a commercial premises where the Land Rover’s keys were stolen.
The case, which has been described by Detective Inspector David McCormack as having a “truly awful” impact, has caused considerable distress for Mrs. Mballow-Baldeh’s family and friends and left the community in shock. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is conducting an investigation into the incident, which highlights the severe consequences of drink-driving and dangerous driving.
