Melinda French Gates steps down from the foundation co-founded with her ex-husband Bill Gates to pursue independent philanthropic efforts, particularly in promoting gender equality worldwide.

Melinda French Gates announced her resignation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on June 7, 2024, marking the end of her role in a philanthropic partnership that began 24 years ago. The foundation, co-founded with her ex-husband Bill Gates in 2000, has become one of the world’s largest private charitable organizations, distributing $77.6 billion in grants by the end of 2023.

French Gates plans to continue her philanthropic efforts independently, concentrating on issues affecting women and girls globally through her organization, Pivotal Ventures. Established in 2015, Pivotal Ventures focuses on promoting gender equality by making high-impact investments and fostering partnerships and advocacy.

French Gates’ resignation has been anticipated since her divorce from Bill Gates in May 2021, and she will receive an additional $12.5 billion to support her philanthropic work as part of their separation agreement. Her previous contributions, including co-founding The Giving Pledge in 2010, have significantly impacted the philanthropy sector, with many hoping she will intensify her focus on gender equity.
