This move comes as a proposed takeover by a United Arab Emirates (UAE)-backed entity faces significant hurdles, including the UK government’s recent stipulation against foreign government ownership of British press outlets. Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer has announced an in-depth review of the deal, citing concerns about free speech implications.
The initial interest from National World in purchasing The Telegraph Media Group emerged following the announcement of the newspaper being put up for sale due to lenders seeking to recoup debts from its previous owners. Despite potential regulatory challenges and the necessity for additional investment, estimated at around £600 million for the acquisition, National World, led by Executive Chair David Montgomery, has positioned itself as an ideal buyer.
