An Ohio resident has been handed a 30-month prison sentence for threatening to kill Katie Hobbs, Arizona’s top elections official, during her gubernatorial campaign, spotlighting the surge in threats against US election officials.

An Ohio man, Joshua Russell, aged 44, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for making threats to kill Arizona’s top elections official, Katie Hobbs, during her 2022 gubernatorial campaign. At the time, Hobbs was serving as the Arizona Secretary of State. Russell pleaded guilty to sending threatening messages, in which he labeled Hobbs a traitor, forewarned of an impending “war,” and falsely accused her of election fraud. The case was handled by US District Judge Steven Logan, who deemed a custodial sentence necessary despite Russell’s efforts in undergoing substance abuse rehabilitation and therapy.

This incident underscores the growing concern over threats against election officials in the United States, a trend that the head of a federal task force, John Keller, attributes to baseless claims about the 2020 election propagated by former President Donald Trump. The task force, established in 2021 to protect election workers from violence, has so far secured the conviction of ten individuals for threats against officials.

The rising violence and hostility toward electoral officials threaten the foundational aspects of democracy, including the conduct of fair and secure elections. This challenge is particularly pronounced in battleground states like Arizona, where the frequency of threats has led to a notable decrease in the number of election administrators willing to remain in their positions, due to safety concerns.

Efforts to counter this wave of violence against election officials include legal actions against those making threats and collaborations between state, local enforcement, and the federal task force. As the US moves towards the 2024 presidential election, these initiatives are vital in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring the protection of those who administrate it.
