The Met Office forecasts contrasting weather conditions across the UK, with late snowfall expected in the north and warmer temperatures in the south, alongside warnings for heavy rain and potential flooding.
The UK is facing a varied weather pattern as the Met Office has forecasted late snowfall in some northern parts while predicting warmer temperatures in the southern regions. The weather agency has highlighted a mix of heavy rain and potential snowfall, particularly in the Scottish Highlands and parts of Northern Ireland, as a contrast between warmer conditions in the south and colder, wintry weather in the north becomes evident. Meteorologist Alex Deakin has attributed the diverse weather conditions to low pressure, which is expected to bring heavy showers, probable thunderstorms, and gusty winds across the country.
As of recent forecasts, temperatures have reached as high as 18C in London’s St James Park, reflecting the warmer air in the south. However, the north is bracing for colder air due to northerly winds, with snowfall anticipated in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The weather over the weekend is expected to be varied, with frost expected in the north, blustery showers in the southwest, and milder temperatures in the south and east of England, reaching 15 to 16C. This variation is due to a mix of “mild Atlantic flow” bringing warmer air to certain areas, and cool northerly winds causing temperature drops and frost in others.
The weather maps have shown striking contrasts of purple and orange, signaling the snowy and stormy conditions expected. Coastal regions are warned of strong winds from the North Sea causing temperature drops. Scotland may see up to 3cm of snow by Saturday evening, while London is forecasted to experience milder weather with temperatures dipping to around 13C. The Met Office has also issued flood warnings and alerts nationwide, advising residents to stay informed about potential flooding risks.
As the UK prepares for a dynamic weather weekend, with cooler temperatures and the possibility of frost, especially in the north, experts are predicting a gradual shift to milder conditions in the ensuing weeks. Despite the forecasted heavy rainfall in western areas, temperatures are expected to return to average levels across the UK, indicating a transient phase of weather as the transition from winter to spring continues.
