The Met Office warns of a severe cold snap beginning on April 3, with Scotland and northern England bracing for notably low temperatures and hazardous weather, including snow reaching as far south as Devon and Cornwall.

The UK is bracing for a severe Arctic blast expected to commence on Wednesday, April 3, bringing notably low temperatures and treacherous weather conditions, especially to Scotland and northern England. The Met Office has identified a potential drop in temperatures to as low as -12C in parts of Scotland and has issued a yellow warning for rain and snow in northeast Scotland. This cold weather event is partly due to a ‘blocking’ weather pattern over Iceland and Greenland, which disrupts the usual flow of the Polar Vortex, causing colder air to be sent south towards the UK.

Forecasters predict that this chilly episode will not only bring widespread cold conditions immediately but also suggest that wintry weather, including snow, could affect regions as far south as Devon and Cornwall during the second week of April. Despite the immediate cold snap, longer-term forecasts from sources such as the BBC suggest a gradual warming later in the month, with the likelihood of wintry showers decreasing as spring progresses. However, colder air might make a return to the northern parts of the UK even as the season advances.
